MILWAUKEE, Wis. — President Donald Trump is rejecting criticism that the ongoing conflict with Iran contradicts his repeated campaign pledge to avoid new wars, arguing that he never guaranteed the United States would remain entirely free of military conflicts during his second term.
In an interview that aired Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump said his opposition has mischaracterized his campaign message. While he frequently highlighted that he did not start any new wars during his first term and criticized what he described as “endless wars,” Trump said he never promised that military action would never be necessary.
“First of all, I didn’t guarantee no war,” Trump told NBC. “Why would I have built the strongest military in the world?”
The conflict with Iran began on February 28 and has become a major foreign policy issue for the administration. Trump defended the military campaign, arguing that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon serves both American and global security interests.
“I’m doing the world a service,” Trump said, while also asserting that previous U.S. military operations had severely damaged Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
During the interview, Trump also discussed a recently abandoned $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund and repeated allegations of election irregularities in California’s primary elections. The exchange became contentious when NBC moderator Kristen Welker challenged some of Trump’s claims, and the interview concluded abruptly.
The administration continues to defend its Iran policy as a limited military operation rather than the type of prolonged conflict Trump frequently criticized during his presidential campaigns.
