COLUMBIA, S.C. — President Donald Trump has endorsed South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette in the state’s Republican gubernatorial primary, providing a significant boost to her campaign just days before voters head to the polls.
The endorsement comes as Rep. Nancy Mace faces mounting challenges in her bid for the Republican nomination. According to recent polling and betting market data cited by Politico, Evette has gained momentum while Mace has fallen well behind the leading candidates in the crowded primary field.
Mace reportedly acknowledged that her push for greater transparency regarding government files connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein contributed to tensions with Trump. The South Carolina congresswoman had previously become one of Trump’s strongest allies after initially criticizing him following the January 6 Capitol riot.
Campaign spending has also highlighted disparities among candidates. Politico reported that Mace spent roughly $50,000 on digital advertising, while competing campaigns collectively spent tens of millions of dollars. The report also noted that a law enforcement incident involving Mace at Charleston International Airport last year generated additional negative attention during the campaign.
Prediction market Polymarket showed Evette’s chances increasing sharply following Trump’s endorsement, while Mace’s odds dropped significantly. Under South Carolina election rules, if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, the top two finishers advance to a runoff election.
Despite trailing in recent surveys, Mace has dismissed unfavorable polling and continues to argue that her anti-establishment message resonates with Republican voters ahead of Tuesday’s primary.
