WASHINGTON, D.C. — The FBI has dismissed several intelligence analysts connected to a controversial 2023 intelligence memo that examined potential links between certain traditionalist Catholic groups and violent extremism, according to the attorney representing the employees.
The terminations reportedly included four intelligence analysts and one supervisory analyst involved in preparing or reviewing the memo, which originated from the FBI’s Richmond, Virginia, field office. The document became a major political controversy after it was made public and drew criticism from lawmakers, religious organizations, and civil liberties advocates.
The memo sought to assess whether some individuals associated with what it described as “Radical Traditionalist Catholic” ideology could be vulnerable to recruitment by racially or ethnically motivated violent extremist groups. After public backlash, FBI leadership withdrew the document and launched an internal review.
According to previous FBI and Justice Department investigations, the memo failed to meet established analytical standards and created the appearance that religious beliefs alone could become the basis for investigative activity. However, those reviews did not find evidence of malicious intent or deliberate misconduct by the analysts involved.
The dismissals come amid broader personnel changes under FBI Director Kash Patel, who has overseen the removal of numerous FBI and Justice Department employees since taking office. Critics have characterized the moves as politically motivated, while supporters argue they are necessary to restore accountability within federal law enforcement agencies.
Attorney David Laufman, who represents the terminated employees, called the firings unjustified and said the analysts were being punished despite previous findings that they had not acted with improper intent.
The FBI declined to comment on the personnel actions.
