Washington, District of Columbia — President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he is troubled by the ongoing investigation into former President Bill Clinton tied to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee’s review of files connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Speaking in an interview with Tom Llamas on NBC Nightly News, Trump said the scrutiny of Clinton personally “bothers” him and described the former president in largely favorable terms.
“I like Bill Clinton. I still like Bill Clinton,” Trump said, adding that he felt Clinton understood him politically and treated him with respect during past interactions. Trump also referenced comments Clinton made during the 2016 Republican primary, recalling that Clinton had warned Democrats not to underestimate Trump’s candidacy. Trump contrasted Clinton’s attitude with that of Hillary Clinton, whom he described as a capable and intelligent political figure despite their contentious 2016 race.
The comments come as both Bill and Hillary Clinton have agreed to testify before the House Oversight Committee as part of its Epstein-related investigation. Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) confirmed that Hillary Clinton is scheduled to appear on Feb. 26, followed by Bill Clinton on Feb. 27, with both agreeing to filmed and transcribed depositions.
Trump also told reporters after a bill signing at the White House that he views the situation as “a shame,” drawing comparisons to investigations he faced in the past. He said he empathizes with the Clintons, noting that he believes they are enduring intense scrutiny similar to what he experienced during prior probes.
