Former President Trump defended his position on abortion, arguing that he had triumphed over the Democrats, who he claimed were struggling to respond to his statement. Trump’s stance, which advocates for leaving the issue to the states, drew criticism from Democrats who argued that he was siding with states that had enacted severe restrictions on abortion. Trump expressed support for exceptions to abortion laws in cases of rape, incest, or to save a mother’s life, and did not back a ban on abortions over 15 or 16 weeks.
His position drew criticism from some Republicans, including Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who disagreed with Trump’s decision not to endorse a national 15-week abortion ban. Trump argued that those who publicly favor stricter abortion laws were committing political malpractice and accused Graham of doing a great disservice to the Republican Party and the country.
