FBI Director Kash Patel has been removed as acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and replaced by Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, according to sources familiar with the move. The timing of Patel’s removal remains unclear, as his information was still listed on the ATF website as of Wednesday.
A defense official confirmed Driscoll’s appointment, stating he will serve concurrently as Army secretary. Driscoll was confirmed to that post in February after being tapped by President Donald Trump in December. He is a former Iraq War veteran and Yale Law School graduate.
Patel, who became FBI director in February, had been leading the ATF since late that month. His appointment drew criticism from 14 House Democrats, who argued in a March 4 letter that Patel lacked experience in areas critical to the ATF’s mission, including gun violence and domestic terrorism.
The ATF, under the Department of Justice, investigates federal offenses involving firearms, explosives, arson, and illicit trafficking.
