President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met privately Saturday morning at the Vatican ahead of Pope Francis’ funeral, as Trump continues efforts to broker a peace deal to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The meeting comes after a tense February encounter between the two leaders that ended in a public argument. This time, photos released by the Ukrainian government showed Trump and Zelenskyy in a one-on-one discussion, later joined by French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, both active in European peace negotiations.
White House communications director Steven Cheung called the meeting “very productive” and said more details would follow.
Trump expressed optimism Friday on social media, claiming most major issues between Ukraine and Russia had been resolved and calling for high-level talks. However, tensions remain over Trump’s suggestion that Ukraine cede Crimea, a move Zelenskyy strongly opposes.
