Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump joked Wednesday that he could someday run for prime minister of Israel, claiming he enjoys overwhelming support among Israeli voters.
The remarks came during a White House exchange with reporters about ongoing ceasefire negotiations involving Israel and Iran. Trump praised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and suggested the longtime Israeli leader closely follows his direction on military and diplomatic matters.
“He’ll do whatever I want him to do,” Trump said of Netanyahu before adding that the Israeli leader “is not treated right in Israel.”
Trump then claimed, without citing evidence, that he currently has “99%” approval in Israel and joked that after leaving office he could move there and run for prime minister. A February survey from the Jewish People Policy Institute found that 73% of Israelis viewed Trump favorably regarding Israel’s interests, though far below the number Trump cited.
The president previously made similar comments about potentially running for office in Venezuela earlier this year.
Trump’s remarks also came amid growing backlash from some Republicans following the primary defeat of Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky. Massie and his allies accused Trump-aligned political groups and pro-Israel organizations of heavily influencing the race after Massie criticized U.S. involvement in the Iran conflict.
