Washington, D.C. – Two police officers who defended the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack filed a lawsuit Wednesday seeking to block President Donald Trump’s newly created $1.776 billion “anti-weaponization” compensation fund.
Former Capitol Police officers Harry Dunn and Daniel Hodges argue the taxpayer-funded program is unconstitutional and could financially benefit individuals involved in the Capitol riot. The lawsuit describes the fund as a “corrupt sham” that allegedly rewards political allies while encouraging future violence.
Trump created the fund as part of a settlement resolving his lawsuit against the IRS over leaked tax records. Under the agreement, a five-member commission appointed by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche will review claims from individuals who believe they were unfairly targeted by politically motivated investigations or prosecutions.
The lawsuit claims the fund could directly compensate Jan. 6 defendants and extremist groups connected to the Capitol attack. Dunn and Hodges also argue the existence of the program increases threats against law enforcement officers who defended Congress that day.
Trump defended the fund earlier this week, saying it was designed to help people whose lives were “destroyed” by what he describes as government “weaponization.” Vice President JD Vance suggested the program could potentially apply to both Republicans and Democrats, including Hunter Biden.
Legal experts have questioned whether opponents of the fund have standing to successfully challenge it in federal court.
