Following his historic guilty verdict, former President Donald Trump suggested the possibility of imprisoning political opponents if he returns to the White House. In a Newsmax interview, Trump hinted at this outcome, stating, “it’s very possible that it’s going to have to happen to them,” referring to his political adversaries. This rhetoric has been a staple of his campaign, including promises to prosecute President Joe Biden.
Trump had previously expressed restraint regarding Hillary Clinton, despite rally chants of “lock her up” during the 2016 election. He now claims this restraint set a precedent that he might abandon. In his interview, Trump criticized the fairness of his trial and reiterated grievances against writer E. Jean Carroll, whom he was found liable for defaming and sexually abusing.
Trump’s comments come after a New York jury convicted him on 34 felony counts for falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments. His statements underscore a recurring theme in his rhetoric: retaliation against those he perceives as enemies, which he claims will be justified if he is imprisoned. Judge Juan Merchan, overseeing the hush money case, has maintained a gag order on Trump, restricting his comments about trial participants.
