Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump sharply criticized two Supreme Court justices he appointed, accusing them of lacking loyalty after they sided against key parts of his agenda in recent court proceedings.
In a lengthy Truth Social post Sunday night, Trump attacked Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett over their roles in decisions involving his global tariff policies and his executive order challenging birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment.
“They were appointed by me, and yet have hurt our Country so badly!” Trump wrote. He also suggested that Republicans may need to consider expanding the Supreme Court, commonly referred to as “court packing,” despite years of conservative criticism of similar Democratic proposals.
Trump’s comments followed a Supreme Court ruling earlier this year overturning broad tariffs imposed during his administration and oral arguments where several justices appeared skeptical of his attempt to reinterpret birthright citizenship through executive action.
The post renewed debate over judicial independence and whether presidents should expect ideological loyalty from judges they appoint. Trump argued that the justices should show loyalty to the country and claimed his policies were helping Americans economically and politically.
Polling cited in the article showed most Americans oppose ending birthright citizenship and also oppose Trump’s tariffs.
