Donald Trump has endorsed Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) for another term as House leader, urging Republicans to unify behind him. In a Truth Social post, Trump called Johnson a “hard-working, religious man” and warned against jeopardizing the GOP’s opportunity to advance its agenda with control of Congress and the White House.
Trump’s endorsement follows growing dissatisfaction among some House Republicans with Johnson’s handling of a recent government spending deal. Representatives like Thomas Massie (R-KY) have pledged not to back Johnson, while others, including Victoria Spartz (R-IN) and Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris (R-MD), demand specific commitments before offering support.
Johnson’s reelection depends on GOP unity, with the party holding a slim 219-215 majority. Losing more than one vote could derail his bid. Republicans must elect a speaker before lawmakers are sworn in.
Past struggles in speaker elections loom large, with Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) requiring 15 ballots to secure the role in January 2023. Trump’s backing, however, may bolster Johnson’s chances of avoiding a similar drawn-out process.
