President Donald Trump on Saturday reiterated that the 25% tariffs on imported cars and auto parts, set to take effect April 2, will be permanent. In an interview with NBC News, he dismissed concerns that the tariffs could raise vehicle prices, saying such increases would only encourage Americans to buy domestically made cars.

“I couldn’t care less if they raise prices,” Trump said. “We have plenty. People are going to start buying American-made cars.”

The president rejected reports that he had urged auto manufacturers not to raise prices, instead expressing confidence that foreign automakers would respond by increasing U.S. production. Companies like Apple, Honda, and Hyundai have already announced new investments in U.S. facilities.

Germany, Japan, and South Korea are expected to be among the countries most affected. Trump said he might consider negotiations only if other nations offer “something of great value.”

Despite market dips following the tariff announcement, Trump maintained that the policy will benefit U.S. manufacturing in the long run.
