At Tuesday’s House Republican meeting, President Donald Trump urged GOP lawmakers to end internal disputes and rally behind his “big, beautiful bill,” which remains stalled amid tensions between conservative fiscal hawks and vulnerable district centrists.
Trump issued a blunt warning against touching core Medicaid benefits, saying, “Don’t f*** around with Medicaid.” He emphasized only “commonsense” reforms are acceptable, such as work requirements, fraud reduction, and excluding undocumented immigrants.
Despite Trump’s push for unity, House Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris (R-MA) remains opposed, stating there are still enough Republican holdouts to block the bill.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump’s goal is to protect Medicaid for the most vulnerable — seniors, pregnant women, and low-income families — while ensuring able-bodied Americans work, search for work, or volunteer at least 20 hours per week.
The bill delays key Medicaid changes until 2029, angering fiscal conservatives. Trump also reportedly used similar colorful language at a White House dinner, reinforcing his determination to finish his agenda in a second term.
