President Trump on Monday reaffirmed support for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth following reports that he shared sensitive Yemen strike details in a private Signal chat including his wife, brother, and personal attorney.
“Pete’s doing a great job — ask the Houthis how he’s doing,” Trump told reporters at the White House Easter Egg Roll, dismissing the scandal as “fake news.” Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt echoed Trump’s sentiment, slamming NPR’s report that the administration is seeking a replacement as “FAKE NEWS.”
However, Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, became the first Republican lawmaker to call for Hegseth’s ouster. “If a Democrat did this we’d be demanding a scalp,” Bacon told Axios, stressing the importance of operational security.
The Pentagon continues to face scrutiny after multiple leaks and resignations. Hegseth blamed “disgruntled former employees” and media bias, denying any classified information was shared.
A separate cybersecurity investigation is underway into shared White House documents on Google Drive.
