At a Nevada rally on Sunday, former President Trump defended his supporters who rioted at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, calling them “warriors.” Trump stated, “Those J6 warriors – they were warriors – but they were really, more than anything else, they’re victims of what happened.” He reiterated his false claims of a rigged 2020 election, saying the rioters were merely protesting this alleged fraud.
Trump falsely claimed that police welcomed the rioters into the Capitol, stating, “Go in, go in, go in, go in,” and described the event as a “setup.” Despite Trump’s portrayal of the rioters as peaceful, about 140 officers were injured, and five died following the attack. A Capitol Police officer testified before Congress, describing the scene as a “war zone” with “hand-to-hand combat.”
In November 2023, Trump referred to those jailed for the January 6 attack as “hostages,” and in March, he pledged to “Free the January 6 Hostages” if reelected. As of January 6, 2024, over 1,200 defendants had been charged, with more than 450 charged with assaulting officers. Over 700 individuals have pleaded guilty to federal charges, according to the Justice Department.
