Former President Donald Trump has criticized “ridiculous” policies previously adopted by Republicans. Facing criticism ahead of the Republican National Convention in Wisconsin, Trump addressed concerns about the GOP’s softer stance on social issues in the official platform, which omits language opposing same-sex marriage and calls for leaving abortion decisions to the states.
In a Fox News interview, Trump argued that the platform reflects common sense rather than targeting moderates. He noted the exclusion of bans on same-sex marriage and the simplification of the abortion issue following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, facilitated by his Supreme Court appointments.
While some conservatives, like former Vice President Mike Pence, expressed disappointment in the platform’s positions, Trump distanced himself from the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, which proposes reversing federal protections for reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights. Trump described some of its proposals as “ridiculous and abysmal,” seeking to differentiate his stance from the more extreme elements within his supporter base.
