President Donald Trump said he might withhold aid from Jordan and Egypt if they refuse to take in Palestinians as part of his proposal for the U.S. to take control of and develop the Gaza Strip.
When asked if he would cut aid, Trump responded, “Yeah, maybe. Sure, why not?” The U.S. provides over $1 billion annually to Jordan and roughly $1.5 billion to Egypt. Both nations have rejected calls to accept more Palestinians, citing security risks and potential destabilization. Jordan already houses about 3 million Palestinians.
Trump, who has suggested Palestinians might not return to Gaza, is set to meet with Jordan’s King Abdullah II in Washington. Meanwhile, Egypt will host an Arab summit on Feb. 27 to discuss the Palestinian issue.
