Donald Trump is considering Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for Defense Secretary, replacing Pete Hegseth, whose confirmation faces mounting opposition over sexual misconduct and mismanagement allegations. DeSantis’ nomination could bolster his political future as he approaches the end of his gubernatorial term in 2027, potentially paving the way for Florida’s first female governor, Jeanette Nuñez.

Hegseth, an Army National Guard veteran and former Fox News host, is struggling to secure Senate support amid reports of a 2017 sexual assault allegation and issues with alcohol abuse. Despite meeting with senators and an upcoming Fox News appearance, skepticism about his confirmation persists, especially among Republican women.

DeSantis, a Yale and Harvard graduate and former Navy JAG officer, became a conservative favorite as governor, tackling COVID policies and cultural issues. His failed presidential bid left his future uncertain, but joining Trump’s cabinet may reinvigorate his career. Trump and DeSantis discussed undisclosed topics during a recent memorial event.

DeSantis’ initial reluctance to join the administration appears to have softened as his name re-emerged on Trump’s shortlist. Meanwhile, DeSantis is also vetting candidates to replace Marco Rubio, tapped for Secretary of State, with Lara Trump among the potential appointees.
