Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump said Monday that a former U.S. president told him he wished he had carried out a military strike on Iran, though aides to all living former presidents denied any such conversation took place.
Trump made the claim during remarks to reporters and again later in the Oval Office, saying a past president told him, “I wish I did what you did.” He declined to identify the individual, stating only that it was not George W. Bush and refusing to confirm whether it was Bill Clinton.
Representatives for Bush, Clinton, and Barack Obama each told NBC News there had been no recent contact with Trump. A source also said the unnamed former president was not Joe Biden, effectively ruling out all four living former presidents.
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for clarification. Trump suggested he could reveal the name in the future but said he did not want to “get him into trouble.”
