President Donald Trump announced Friday that no U.S. officials will attend this year’s Group of 20 summit in South Africa, condemning the host nation’s treatment of white Afrikaner farmers. Trump had previously said he would skip the global gathering of major and emerging economies. His representative, Secretary of State JD Vance, has now canceled his planned trip as well, according to a person familiar with his schedule.

Trump called hosting the summit in South Africa “a total disgrace,” accusing the country of allowing “violence and confiscation” of white-owned farms. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa rejected those claims, saying allegations of persecution are “completely false” and that white citizens maintain higher living standards than Black residents decades after apartheid’s end.

The Trump administration has continued its criticism of South Africa, with Trump recently urging the G20 to expel the nation. Earlier this year, Secretary of State Marco Rubio boycotted a separate G20 foreign ministers’ meeting over its focus on diversity and climate initiatives.
