President-elect Donald Trump criticized Special Counsel Jack Smith after the public release of Smith’s final report on Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Trump called Smith a “lamebrain prosecutor” and accused him of political bias, claiming the report was based on destroyed evidence and designed to undermine him.
“The voters have spoken,” Trump declared on Truth Social, asserting his innocence and condemning the timing of the report as desperation.
Smith’s 174-page report, released early Tuesday, outlined evidence of Trump’s use of false election fraud claims to obstruct the peaceful transfer of power. Smith stated the evidence could have secured a conviction but cited the reelection of Trump as a barrier to prosecution.
Smith, who resigned Friday, refuted allegations of political influence, calling Trump’s claims “laughable.” A last-minute attempt by Trump to block the report was denied by Judge Aileen Cannon.
