Washington, DC — President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 31%, the lowest level recorded for him during either of his presidential terms in Reuters/Ipsos polling, as Republicans head into the Nov. 3 midterms facing growing voter dissatisfaction over the economy.
The four-day poll found 31% of Americans approve of Trump’s performance, down one point from two weeks earlier.
The numbers are even more troubling for Republicans on the congressional ballot. Among registered voters, Democrats lead Republicans 47% to 35%, a 12-point advantage and the widest Democratic margin recorded by Reuters/Ipsos during the current election cycle. Two weeks earlier, Democrats led by seven points.
Women favored Democratic congressional candidates by an especially wide 50% to 32% margin. Men also favored Democrats, though by a smaller amount.
Economic dissatisfaction appears to be a major factor. Sixty-eight percent of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the economy, including 37% of self-identified Republicans. Voters also preferred Democrats over Republicans on managing the economy, 40% to 33%.
Reuters noted that gasoline prices rose sharply following U.S. military strikes on Iran earlier this year, adding pressure to household budgets.
Generic congressional polling measures national sentiment and does not account for individual House and Senate races, where geography and district boundaries can significantly affect the final results.
