Washington, D.C. – Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s resignation from Congress on Friday deepened her very public split with  President Donald Trump, who openly celebrated her decision despite years of political alignment. Greene, representing Georgia’s 14th District, said in a lengthy social media statement that “loyalty should be a two-way street” and argued that Congress had been “sidelined” under Trump’s administration. She also said she had endured persistent threats, personal attacks, and “never-ending” slander.

Trump, who recently withdrew support for Greene after disputes over the release of Jeffrey Epstein files as well as foreign policy and health care disagreements, reacted enthusiastically. He told ABC News her resignation was “great news for the country” and downplayed questions about whether she informed him ahead of time.

The news drew widespread reaction. Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett wrote that she “didn’t see this coming,” pointing to threats faced by lawmakers who oppose Trump. GOP strategist Shermichael Singleton called the announcement “a big shocker,” while Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna argued Greene could still be a “formidable 2028 candidate,” citing her positions on Epstein files and AI regulation. In Georgia, Democrat Shawn Harris urged supporters to prepare for the upcoming transition, saying he is ready to take the seat when Greene steps down on January 5, 2026.
