WASHINGTON, D.C. — Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin says the Trump administration will continue its mass deportation campaign despite Republicans losing control of both chambers of Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections.
“Deportations will continue,” Mullin wrote Wednesday, later adding that ICE operates “365 days per year” and would keep arresting and removing undocumented immigrants.
The comments came after Democrats won sweeping congressional victories, fueled partly by Latino voters who shifted away from Republicans amid concerns over immigration enforcement, rising costs and the broader direction of the country. Reuters found Republican support fell sharply across many majority-Latino counties compared with 2024.
Mullin emphasized that ICE would continue targeting people with serious criminal records. However, broader deportation data show the administration’s enforcement campaign extends well beyond that group. The Migration Policy Institute estimates roughly 980,000 deportations occurred between January 2025 and July 2026, with a large majority involving people without criminal convictions.
Democrats have promised increased oversight of ICE once they take control of Congress in January and may pursue funding restrictions and investigations into detention practices and enforcement operations.
Their ability to immediately halt deportations will be limited, however, because Republicans previously approved multi-year immigration-enforcement funding extending into 2029.
