TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis offered one of the Republican Party’s bleakest assessments yet of Tuesday’s midterm elections, calling the nationwide losses “close to an extinction-level event” and warning that the damage could take years to repair.

Speaking Wednesday in Tallahassee, DeSantis said Republicans may emerge with Democrats holding as many as 55 Senate seats and roughly 250 seats in the House. Those figures were his projections rather than final totals, with several races still unresolved Wednesday morning.

What is already clear is that Democrats captured control of both chambers of Congress and flipped seats across territory Republicans had considered secure. The Associated Press reported Democratic Senate victories in traditionally Republican states including Texas, Kansas and South Carolina, while the party gained more than two dozen House seats.

DeSantis said the consequences could extend well beyond President Donald Trump’s remaining two years in office, arguing that Republicans now face a difficult rebuilding process.

The losses have already triggered significant Republican infighting. Trump has blamed candidates, Fox News and insufficient MAGA enthusiasm, while Vice President JD Vance pointed to the Iran war as a major factor.

Republicans also lost governorships and state legislative ground, while Democrats made gains among voters who cited the cost of living, the economy and dissatisfaction with Trump as major concerns.
