While President Trump campaigned on stopping illegal immigration, his administration has primarily restricted legal avenues for migrants. Recent executive actions have suspended the refugee program, ended Biden-era parole programs, and attempted to revoke birthright citizenship.

The shutdown of the CBP One app, which helped migrants book asylum appointments, left 260,000 people stranded at the U.S.-Mexico border. Immigration advocates argue this contradicts Republican claims that migrants should “get in line.”

Trump’s executive order on birthright citizenship, which would deny U.S. citizenship to children of nonimmigrant visa holders, was blocked by a federal judge as unconstitutional. The administration also terminated parole programs that allowed Ukrainians, Afghans, and Latin American migrants to enter the U.S., leading to fears that more asylum seekers will turn to human smugglers.

Experts warn that targeting lawful migration risks undermining U.S. asylum systems and forcing vulnerable migrants into dangerous alternatives.
