A Norwegian tourist says he was detained, questioned, and deported by U.S. immigration officials at Newark Airport after agents found memes mocking Vice President JD Vance on his phone. But Homeland Security officials firmly deny the meme was the reason for his removal.
Mads Mikkelsen — unrelated to the Danish actor — was held for five hours, strip-searched, and fingerprinted after arriving for vacation on June 11. He claims he was interrogated about drugs, extremism, and political content on his phone, including a viral image of Vance with an exaggerated bald head.
However, CBP and DHS say Mikkelsen was denied entry solely due to his admission of prior marijuana use, still federally prohibited despite being legal in many U.S. states. “Claims that Mads Mikkelsen was denied entry because of a JD Vance meme are FALSE,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
Mikkelsen disputes the explanation and accuses CBP of “blatant falsification.” CBP maintains broad discretion to search digital devices and deny entry to foreign nationals.
