Top House Republicans have sent criminal referrals to the Justice Department, recommending charges against President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, and brother, James Biden, for allegedly making false statements to Congress. The letter, signed by House Oversight Chair James Comer, Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan, and Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith, accuses the Bidens of providing false testimony to hinder the impeachment inquiry into President Biden.
The referral comes as Hunter Biden faces an unrelated trial on gun charges in Delaware. His attorney, Abbe Lowell, dismissed the referrals as a “desperate attempt” to distract from the impeachment inquiry’s failures. James Biden’s lawyer, Paul Fishman, similarly criticized the move as a partisan distraction following Donald Trump’s recent conviction on felony charges of falsifying business records.
House Speaker Mike Johnson supported the referrals, stating that Attorney General Merrick Garland should open investigations to demonstrate impartial justice. Conversely, Rep. Jamie Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the Oversight Committee, mocked the effort as a futile attempt to find wrongdoing where none exists, highlighting that the investigation had not implicated President Biden.
Both Hunter and James Biden had testified in February before the Oversight and Judiciary committees. Hunter Biden maintained that he never involved his father in his business dealings, asserting this in his prepared opening statement. The chairmen’s letter accuses Hunter Biden of falsely distancing himself from a corporate entity linked to foreign money and lying about text messages sent to a Chinese business partner. James Biden is accused of misleading statements about a meeting between Joe Biden and business associate Tony Bobulinski in 2017.
