WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) on Thursday criticized a criminal referral reportedly submitted to the Justice Department accusing him of mortgage fraud, calling the move politically driven and tied to his long-running disputes with President Donald Trump. The referral was made by the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), led by Trump ally Bill Pulte, who has also overseen mortgage reviews of several Democratic officials.
Swalwell, one of Trump’s most vocal critics in Congress, suggested the referral was retaliation for his ongoing lawsuit against the president over the Jan. 6 Capitol riots. “As the most vocal critic of Donald Trump over the last decade and as the only person who still has a surviving lawsuit against him, the only thing I am surprised about is that it took him this long to come after me,” he said in a statement.
NBC News, which first reported the referral, noted that similar actions from Pulte have targeted Democrats including New York Attorney General Letitia James, Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.). Those referrals have alleged access to improper loan terms or false statements on mortgage applications. The FHFA and Justice Department have not commented.
Swalwell said he “fully” expects prosecution under the Trump administration and has pressed FBI Director Kash Patel about being listed in his book as one of 60 “government gangsters.” The congressman said he will continue pursuing his lawsuit against Trump and speaking out on behalf of his constituents.
