House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) directed U.S. flags to be flown at full-staff on Inauguration Day, briefly halting President Biden’s order to honor former President Jimmy Carter by keeping flags at half-staff until January 28. Johnson stated this adjustment was to “celebrate our country coming together behind the inauguration of our 47th President, Donald Trump.” Flags will return to half-staff the next day to continue honoring Carter.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott also ordered flags raised for the inauguration, emphasizing the need to celebrate the nation’s future. Similarly, flags at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort were raised despite briefly complying with Biden’s directive. The U.S. Flag Code mandates flags remain at half-staff for 30 days following the death of a president, but states and individuals have diverged from this tradition.
