Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) plans to request that the House Ethics Committee withhold a potentially damaging report on former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), President-elect Trump’s nominee for attorney general. Johnson argued releasing the report would set a “terrible precedent.”

Gaetz resigned from the House this week, a move that typically halts Ethics Committee investigations. However, bipartisan calls in the Senate demand the findings be made public ahead of Gaetz’s confirmation hearings. Johnson’s stance represents a shift from his usual reluctance to intervene in Ethics matters.

Gaetz has denied wrongdoing, alleging the investigation was reopened by former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as retaliation for his role in McCarthy’s ousting.

Trump’s selection of Gaetz, a divisive figure, has sparked backlash, with critics citing the unresolved allegations as disqualifying. The Ethics Committee met Thursday but has not decided whether to release its findings.
