A group of Senate Democrats is calling for a federal investigation into whether President Trump and administration officials are leveraging U.S. trade negotiations to benefit Elon Musk‘s Starlink satellite network. The inquiry request follows a Washington Post report alleging U.S. diplomats promoted Starlink during talks with foreign governments.
In a letter sent Wednesday to the Department of Justice, Office of Government Ethics, and State Department inspectors, Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Mark Warner (D-VA), and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) said evidence suggests Musk may be using his role as senior adviser to the president for personal gain.
The senators flagged that Starlink, once stymied in several markets, has seen rapid approvals since Trump returned to office. On the same day Trump and Musk visited Saudi Arabia, Starlink was granted operating rights there as part of broader U.S.-Saudi defense and trade agreements.
“Suggesting a foreign government adopt Starlink in exchange for tariff relief appears to be a textbook case of corruption,” the senators wrote.
