Senate Republicans are urging Elon Musk to stop discussing Social Security and for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to steer clear of it. Musk’s recent claim that Social Security is a “Ponzi scheme” and his plan to cut up to 12 percent of the Social Security Administration’s workforce have alarmed GOP lawmakers, who worry it could become a political liability.
Republicans warn that Social Security reform is politically toxic, with any party that attempts changes risking major backlash from voters. They fear that reductions in staff and field offices will frustrate constituents, making it harder to resolve benefit claims and other issues. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) said Musk’s rhetoric is unhelpful and causes unnecessary anxiety for seniors and others who rely on the program. She emphasized that Trump has explicitly stated he does not intend to cut Social Security.
Musk’s comments have fueled Democratic attacks. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) seized on them last week, claiming that Republicans are targeting Social Security and Medicare. The White House has since reiterated that Trump will not cut benefits, but DOGE’s cost-cutting measures, including office closures and requiring in-person visits for certain services, are raising concerns on Capitol Hill.
