At a NewsNation town hall, Republican vice presidential candidate and Ohio Sen. JD Vance defended previous claims that Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating pets. Addressing NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo, Vance clarified, “You’re hearing a lot of things from your constituents. They’re telling you things, and I think it’s important for me to listen.”

Vance had echoed the unfounded allegations in September, later denied by the Springfield Police Department, sparking bipartisan criticism. Ohio Rep. Mike Turner (R), who represents Springfield, called the claims “tragic and completely untrue.” Following these statements, Springfield received bomb threats, leading two schools and two colleges to temporarily close.

Vance acknowledged the need for caution in his statements but stressed his role in addressing constituent concerns, saying, “What am I supposed to do? Hang up the phone and tell them they’re a liar because the media doesn’t want me to talk about it?”
