Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) said Thursday that the Democratic Party lacks credibility when criticizing Donald Trump for corruption due to its own past scandals. Speaking at a Center for American Progress event, Murphy said voters often believe “this version of democracy seems rigged” and view both parties as equally corrupt.
Without naming names, Murphy referenced “high-profile problems” within the party over the past decade. He added that Democratic 2024 messaging on saving democracy “fell flat,” particularly among young people and men.
Murphy, viewed as a possible 2028 presidential contender, emphasized the need for “bold” reforms to restore trust, including a constitutional amendment for campaign finance regulation. He also criticized the Left’s dismissiveness toward male identity and mental health concerns, saying Democrats must respond with empathy and authenticity.
While praising Kamala Harris’s campaign, Murphy said the party needs to communicate in a more unfiltered way. He warned that democratic backsliding under Trump resembles regimes in Hungary and Turkey, stating, “the death of democracy… happens over time.”
Murphy’s comments come as scrutiny grows over Biden’s health and Democratic leadership.
