The Secret Service confirmed Friday that Director Kimberly Cheatle will testify before the House Oversight Committee on Monday regarding the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi stated on X, “The Secret Service is fully accountable for the safety of its protectees… to ensure it never happens again.”
Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., issued a subpoena for Cheatle, citing a lack of transparency and cooperation from Homeland Security officials. Cheatle had previously committed to an independent review ordered by President Biden and cooperation with congressional oversight.
The Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general announced an investigation into the Secret Service’s security measures during Trump’s July 13, 2024, campaign event in Pennsylvania, where shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, got within 135 meters of the stage before opening fire. Trump was unharmed, but one rallygoer was killed and two others critically injured. Secret Service snipers killed Crooks.
