Acting Secret Service Director Ron Rowe informed senators that the near assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on July 13, 2024, was not caused by insufficient funding. In a letter to Sens. Christopher S. Murphy (D-Conn.) and Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Rowe stated that ongoing reviews and investigations suggest the security failure wasn’t due to resource shortages.
Murphy and Britt, key figures in homeland security appropriations, had inquired whether the Secret Service’s budget was adequate for its 2024 election responsibilities. While the agency did not request additional funds outright, Rowe acknowledged the need for expanded capabilities due to heightened threats, indicating that future funding might be necessary.
The Senate Appropriations Committee continues to scrutinize the agency’s budget, as the FY25 Homeland Security bill remains the only spending title yet to advance. Despite larger budgets in recent years, the senators remain divided on whether additional funds should be allocated.
