Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said former Vice President Kamala Harris might be president today if she had run a campaign like Zohran Mamdani’s. Speaking to Politico Magazine, Sanders praised Mamdani’s apparent Democratic primary win for New York City mayor as a model for progressive, grassroots success.
“Instead of taking money from billionaires and putting stupid ads on television,” Sanders said, “you mobilize thousands of people around the progressive agenda that speaks to working-class people.” He added that Harris failed by listening to consultants instead of building a movement.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist and immigrant from Uganda, appears poised to defeat former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the mayoral primary. If elected, he would become NYC’s first Muslim and Asian mayor. Final results are expected by July 1.
Sanders has long criticized the Democratic Party for abandoning working-class voters, a theme he reiterated in his comments praising Mamdani’s campaign strategy.
Mamdani wrote on X: “In the words of Nelson Mandela: it always seems impossible until it’s done… I am honored to be your Democratic nominee.”
