Secretary of State Marco Rubio will embark on his first official overseas trip next week, visiting Panama, El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic. According to department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce, the visit underscores Rubio’s focus on addressing migration issues and strengthening ties with neighboring countries.
“This trip reflects a serious approach to tackle the root causes of migration and demonstrates America’s commitment to regional collaboration,” Bruce said.
Rubio’s stop in Panama is likely to draw attention due to President Donald Trump’s past calls to reclaim the Panama Canal. Trump has accused Panama of breaking agreements made during the canal’s transfer under President Jimmy Carter, further alleging Chinese control of canal operations—claims denied by Panamanian officials.
Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, is scheduled to return to Washington by early February.
