Washington, D.C. — A new Reuters/Ipsos poll finds that 61% of Americans believe President Donald Trump has become “erratic with age,” underscoring ongoing concerns about aging leadership in Washington.

The six-day survey of 4,638 U.S. adults, which concluded Feb. 23, shows stark partisan divides. While 89% of Democrats described Trump as erratic, 30% of Republicans and 64% of independents agreed. Overall, only 45% of respondents said Trump appeared “mentally sharp and able to deal with challenges,” down from 54% in a similar 2023 poll.

Despite those concerns, Trump’s job approval rating stood at 40%, up two percentage points from earlier this month and largely stable since April. He began his current term at 47% approval.

The poll also found broad agreement that Washington’s political leadership skews older than voters prefer. Seventy-nine percent of respondents said elected officials in Washington are too old to represent most Americans. The average age in the U.S. Senate is about 64, while House members average 58.

Trump, who returned to office at age 78, will turn 80 in June. The debate over leadership fitness follows similar scrutiny faced by former President Joe Biden, who left office at 82.
