President Trump is calling for criminal charges against former President Obama and other officials after Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard released documents challenging intelligence assessments from the 2016 election. But while House Republicans express outrage, few are joining Trump in demanding prosecutions.

Gabbard’s releases include a 2020 report casting doubt on claims that Russia preferred Trump in 2016. Still, the core intelligence conclusion—that Russia conducted a major operation to disrupt the election—remains intact. Critics argue the materials don’t contain new evidence of wrongdoing, and Democrats say the effort is a distraction from growing scrutiny over the Epstein files.

House Speaker Mike Johnson and Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) promised congressional investigations but stopped short of endorsing legal action. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and others have called for a special counsel, while Trump posted AI-generated memes of Obama in handcuffs.

Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.) dismissed the allegations as fabricated. “There is not a court in the United States that will do anything other than laugh hysterically,” he said.

While some in the GOP back arrests, others like Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) caution that calls for prosecution are “way too premature.”
