Republicans in the Senate blocked a bill that sought to establish the right to access in vitro fertilization (IVF) and mandate insurance coverage for the procedure. The vote, 51-44, fell short of the 60 votes needed to advance the measure, with GOP senators accusing Democrats of using the issue as a political maneuver.
Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) joined Democrats in supporting the bill. However, some Republicans, including Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), argued that there is no Republican support for banning IVF, proposing instead a bill to withhold Medicaid funds from states that ban the treatment.
Democrats, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), framed the vote as an important test of former President Trump’s recent call for universal IVF coverage, emphasizing its connection to broader reproductive rights. The issue has become more pressing since a recent Alabama court ruling deemed frozen embryos as children, affecting IVF clinics in the state.
