Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday he expects Donald Trump’s administration will move to acquire Greenland “systematically,” following renewed comments from the U.S. president about purchasing the Arctic territory.
Speaking at the International Arctic Forum, Putin said the effort “concerns two specific states,” but expressed concern over broader NATO activity in the High North, citing Finland and Sweden’s recent entry into the alliance.
Trump on Wednesday reiterated his desire to acquire Greenland, saying, “If we don’t have Greenland, we can’t have great international security.” He described the move as necessary for both national and global defense.
Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance are scheduled to visit Greenland Friday, fueling speculation about the administration’s intent. The visit includes a stop at the U.S. base in Pituffik. Usha Vance’s other appearances were canceled following controversy surrounding a Signal group chat involving military plans.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are expected to join the delegation. Trump called the trip “friendliness, not provocation.”
Putin warned that Russia is increasing military readiness in response to NATO’s growing Arctic presence.
