ABOARD PAPAL PLANE, EN ROUTE TO ALGIERS — Pope Leo XIV said Monday he has “no fear” of President Donald Trump and will continue speaking out against war, following escalating criticism from the White House over the Iran conflict.
Speaking to reporters during a flight to Algeria, the pope emphasized that his calls for peace are rooted in religious principles rather than politics. “I will continue to speak out loudly against war,” he said, stressing the need for dialogue and international cooperation.
The comments come after Trump criticized the pontiff on social media, calling him “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy” in response to the pope’s condemnation of threats tied to the U.S.-Israeli war in Iran.
Leo has increasingly positioned himself as a moral voice against the conflict, warning of the human toll and urging leaders to seek diplomatic solutions. He also rejected engaging directly in political disputes, saying his role is to promote peace rather than debate individual leaders.
The pope is beginning a multi-country trip across Africa, where he is expected to continue focusing on humanitarian and diplomatic issues.
