MIAMI, FL — A homeless man is being credited with helping rescue a 6-year-old boy who was found alone on a Miami street late Wednesday night.

Arnett Johnson, who said he has been living on a bench for several months after serving time in prison, told local reporters he noticed the child wandering alone near a busy intersection. Concerned for the boy’s safety, Johnson searched for a parent but, finding none, contacted police and remained with the child until officers arrived.

“This was a Good Samaritan that was sleeping in the streets and called us,” a Miami police officer said, noting the situation could have ended differently without intervention.

Authorities said the child had been missing for more than 12 hours. Investigators later identified the boy’s mother and arrested her on a child neglect charge after the child told officers he had been left alone.

The Florida Department of Children and Families has since taken custody of the child as the case moves forward.

Johnson downplayed his actions, saying he simply did what he believed anyone would do under the circumstances.
