An Emerson College poll found that 41% of voters aged 18-29 believed the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was somewhat or completely acceptable, compared to 40% who deemed it unacceptable. The response sharply contrasted with older age groups, where majorities rejected the killing. Among voters aged 50 and older, only 10% or fewer supported the act.
Men were slightly more likely than women to justify the murder (19% vs. 14%). Politically, 22% of Democrats found the act acceptable compared to 12% of Republicans and 16% of independents. Spencer Kimball, Emerson College Polling’s executive director, noted the findings reflect shifting societal attitudes among younger voters and Democrats.
The killing sparked significant online reactions, with younger users turning suspect Luigi Mangione into a folk hero. Social media memes mocking Thompson and supporting Mangione have proliferated. A legal fundraiser for Mangione has raised nearly $140,000, with messages calling him a “hero” and “man of the people.”
Mangione was arrested after a five-day manhunt and faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder, as authorities work to extradite him to New York.
