According to a poll by The Economist/YouGov released Thursday, 79 percent of Democrats would approve of Vice President Harris replacing President Biden as the party’s nominee if he chooses to step aside before the November election. The survey reflects a growing sentiment among Democrats urging Biden to withdraw following a lackluster debate performance against former President Trump.

While 28 percent of Democrats believe Harris is more likely to defeat Trump than Biden, 32 percent view her chances as equal to Biden’s, and 24 percent see them as less likely. Overall, 51 percent of Americans think Biden should definitely or probably step aside for another Democrat to run, citing concerns primarily about his age, health, or cognitive function (68 percent).

Despite these sentiments, the poll suggests skepticism about Biden actually withdrawing from the race, with only 19 percent of respondents thinking it likely (4 percent very likely, 15 percent somewhat likely).

The poll surveyed 1,582 respondents from July 13-16 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. Biden reiterated on Wednesday that he intends to stay in the race unless a medical condition forces him to reconsider.
