Washington, DC — A new national poll suggests that while President Donald Trump continues to enjoy strong backing from his core supporters, enthusiasm among self-identified MAGA Republicans has declined since the spring, raising fresh questions about his hold on the GOP ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
According to an NBC News survey released Sunday, 70 percent of respondents who identify as MAGA Republicans said they “strongly approve” of Trump’s job performance. That figure remains high but represents an eight-point drop from April, when 78 percent expressed strong approval. Among Republicans who identify more with the party than the MAGA movement, strong approval slipped more modestly, from 38 percent in April to 35 percent in the latest poll.
The survey also found a shift in partisan identity within the Republican Party. Earlier this year, a majority of Republicans said they aligned more closely with MAGA than with the GOP itself. The new results show an even split, with 50 percent identifying with each, suggesting some softening of the movement’s dominance inside the party.
Similar dynamics appeared among Democrats. Respondents were evenly divided between identifying primarily with progressive causes and identifying with the Democratic Party, a change from April when progressives held a clear edge.
The poll comes amid visible internal tensions for Trump. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, once one of his most vocal allies, publicly broke with the president in recent months and announced plans to retire early from Congress. Trump has also faced resistance from Republicans in states such as Indiana, where party leaders rejected redistricting proposals he supported.
The SurveyMonkey poll included more than 20,000 adults and carries a margin of error of 1.9 percentage points.
