A poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows that only 2 in 10 Americans approve of President Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden after he had pled not to do so. About half of respondents disapproved, with a significant portion expressing strong dissatisfaction.

The pardon followed Hunter Biden’s conviction on gun and tax charges. President Biden described the prosecution as a “miscarriage of justice,” likening the legal situation to political targeting. The White House defended the move, citing the politicized nature of the case.

The decision has sparked criticism from both Republicans and some Democrats. While 4 in 10 Democrats approved of the pardon, 3 in 10 disapproved, and many had no opinion. Most Republicans and about half of independents viewed it negatively.

Reactions varied. Some, like Democrat Robert Jenkins of Ohio, empathized with Biden’s decision as a parent, while others, such as Republican Peter Prestia of New Jersey, criticized the president for reneging on his earlier promise.

The pardon has not significantly affected Biden’s overall approval rating, which remains around 40%, consistent with AP-NORC polls since January 2022. However, it continues to generate political backlash.

The survey revealed generational and racial divides, with older adults more likely to approve of the pardon than younger ones, and a majority of white respondents disapproving compared to smaller shares of Hispanic and Black respondents.

Poll Details: Conducted Dec. 5-9, 2024, among 1,251 adults, with a margin of error of ±3.7 percentage points.
